About the charging test

Charging speed is a comparison, never a number on its own. This page gives you the two halves that make the comparison work: an exact clock, and every percentage point along the way.

The shape matters more than the total

Charging runs fast to roughly 80% and then deliberately slows — the last stretch is the charger protecting the cell, not a fault. What matters is where your curve leaves the steep part. One that stalls in the middle and then picks back up is usually heat, a connector, or a cable that cannot carry the current.

Change one thing at a time

A charge timed with the customer's cable and one timed with your bench supply are not comparable, and neither are two charges that began at different levels. Fix the charger, the cable and the starting percentage, and the device is the only variable left.

Charging under load

The load settings apply here too, and they answer what the charger alone cannot: whether the device can charge while it works. A phone that gains charge sitting idle but loses it under a heavy load is telling you the supply cannot keep up.

Plug the device in, choose a load, and start. The run will not begin until the device reports that it is charging, so a cable that is not seated properly gets caught early. Note the level you started from — the next test has to match it.
By design. Lithium cells take a bulk charge quickly to around 80% and then taper, because pushing the last stretch at full current would heat and age the cell. Thirty minutes to 80% and another hour to finish is normal, and the curve shows where the taper began.
No. A browser sees the percentage and whether the cable is in — never volts, amps or watts. What it can time is the climb, which is the part a customer feels: a phone that takes twice as long as its twin has a problem, whatever the charger claims.
Not necessarily. Run the same charge on a known-good device with the same charger and cable: if both are slow, suspect the charger or the cable; if only one is, it is the port, the charging circuit or the cell. A discharge test then says whether the cell holds what it takes in.
The clock does; the automatic reading does not. Safari has no Battery Status API and no other iOS browser can add one, so you enter the percentage as you check on it. A reading every ten minutes draws the curve perfectly well.
